The 10,000 steps challenge

A walking challenge with a clear finish line every day. Great for groups with mixed fitness, because everyone can walk.

  • 30 days
  • 10,000 steps
  • Every day
  • Ranked by days

The rules

  1. 1

Read your total from your phone or watch and enter it as a Count check-in. The day counts at 10,000.

  2. 2

Only days inside the challenge dates count towards the leaderboard.

  3. 3

Enter yesterday's total the next morning if you forgot. You can log up to 7 days back.

  4. 4

Most completed days wins. Ties share a place.

Why this challenge works

10,000 steps is a round, memorable number rather than a magic threshold. What matters most is moving more than you do now, and a daily count makes that visible.

Walking fits into days that are already full: calls on foot, stairs instead of lifts, a loop after dinner. That makes it one of the fairest challenges for a group with different schedules.

If 10,000 is a big jump from your current average, create the challenge with a lower target. A group that finishes at 7,000 a day beats one that quits at 10,000.

Week by week

  1. Week 1

Find your baseline and add one daily walk of 15 to 20 minutes. Most people close a big part of the gap here.

  2. Week 2

Stack steps onto routines: walking meetings, a stop further from home, a lap before lunch.

  3. Week 3

Plan for the low days. Weekends and rainy days are where streaks break, so keep an indoor option ready.

  4. Week 4

Race the leaderboard. Evening walks decide close finishes.

Tips to win

  • Log at the same time each night so the check-in becomes part of winding down.
  • Use the evening streak-at-risk nudge as your cue for a short walk.
  • Link it to a goal, like a charity walk or a hike, to give the numbers a purpose.
  • Pick a length your group can finish. 30 days is a good first run; you can start the next one straight after.
