How to build a habit of going to bed on time

A good morning usually starts the night before. Going to bed at a steady time is one of the kindest habits you can give yourself.

Why it matters

Sleep experts widely recommend a regular sleep schedule. Going to bed and waking at similar times helps your body settle into a rhythm, and many people find they feel more rested with consistency alone.

Bedtime is also where many other habits live or die. Late nights make early mornings, exercise and focus harder. Protecting your bedtime quietly supports everything else.

This habit is about routine, not treatment. If you regularly struggle to fall or stay asleep, or feel tired despite enough time in bed, speak with a doctor.

Start small

Pick a bedtime just 15 minutes earlier than your current one. Mark it done if you make it. After a week, move it another 15 minutes until you reach the time you want.

Tips that make it stick

  1. 1

Set your reminder 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime. That is your cue to start winding down, not to jump into bed.

  2. 2

Choose one wind-down action: dim the lights, put your phone on charge outside the bedroom, or read a few pages.

  3. 3

Add a mood to your morning check-in. Over time you may notice how bedtime affects how you feel.

  4. 4

Late nights happen. A streak freeze spends itself instead of breaking your streak, so one party does not undo weeks of work.

Sleep on time: common questions

Either before sleep or the next morning. If you forget, you can log it later, up to 7 days back.
