The 30-day monk mode challenge

Monk mode means a stretch of fewer distractions and more focus on what matters. This version keeps it concrete: 90 minutes of deep work, five days a week, for a month.

  • 30 days
  • 90 minutes
  • 5 times a week
  • Ranked by check-ins

The rules

  1. 1

Log your minutes after each block. A day counts once you reach 90 minutes.

  2. 2

Deep work means one important task, with your phone away and notifications and chat closed. Email does not count.

  3. 3

The target is 5 sessions a week. The leaderboard ranks by total check-ins inside the challenge dates.

  4. 4

Most check-ins wins. Ties share a place.

Why this challenge works

Monk mode became popular online as a way of stepping back from noise for a while to focus on one goal. The useful part is not the name, it is the decision to protect time for hard work before anything else claims it.

A Duration target makes focus measurable. Ninety minutes is long enough to get properly into a task, and logging the minutes shows how much real focus your week contained.

Five sessions a week, rather than seven, leaves room for rest and for days full of meetings. It also keeps the group fair: someone with a packed Monday can catch up later in the week.

Week by week

  1. Week 1

Find your slot. Block the same 90 minutes in your calendar most days and decide the task the night before.

  2. Week 2

Remove friction: phone in another room, one window open, and a note on each check-in of what you got done.

  3. Week 3

Defend the time. Move or decline one meeting a week that lands on your block.

  4. Week 4

Finish with around 20 sessions and read back through your notes. You will have a clear record of what a month of focus produced.

Tips to win

  • Split the 90 minutes if you need to. Two 45-minute blocks still count; log both.
  • Use any clock or timer to keep time. Streako logs the minutes; it does not run a timer.
  • Agree as a group what counts as deep work and write it in the challenge description.
  • Pair it with a limit social media or phone-free mornings habit to keep the rest of the day quiet too.
