Short challenges (7 to 21 days) are good for testing a habit and for groups trying something together for the first time. Thirty days is the classic: long enough to matter, short enough to finish.
Long challenges like 75 or 90 days are a different commitment. They work best with a small daily standard you can hit on your worst day, not your best one. If you are new to a habit, run a 30-day round first and go longer next time.
Thirty or so days is also not the finish line for a habit. Research suggests a new daily behaviour takes around 66 days on average to feel automatic, with a wide range. The habit formation calculator shows those dates for you.
