Habit swap

Alcohol vs exercise: swap the after-work drink for a workout

The after-work drink marks the end of the day. A workout can mark it too, and leave you feeling better the next morning.

The verdict: Exercise is a helpful add-on, not a cure. A short workout can take the edge off an urge and fills the time a drink used to take, but it does not replace medical help for heavy drinking.

Side by side

Alcohol vs exercise

End of the day
Alcohol: A drink to switch off.

Long term
Alcohol: No safe level for cancer risk.
Exercise: Lower risk of heart disease and better mood.

What you gain

The case for exercise

A walk lowers the urge

Heavy drinkers who walked briskly for 15 minutes had lower alcohol urges than when they sat, and paid less attention to pictures of alcohol.

Less drinking in treatment

For people being treated for alcohol use disorder, adding exercise reduced how much they drank. It did not reduce binge drinking.

Watch the post-game drink

Active people often drink more, not less: sport and drinking go together socially. Make the workout the swap, not the reason for a drink afterwards.

The swap

How to make the swap in Streako

  1. 1

Add a Yes / No habit called "Alcohol-free day", every day, with a reminder at 21:30.

  2. 2

Add "Exercise" as a Duration habit: 30 minutes, 3 times a week.

  3. 3

At your usual drink time, go for a 15-minute walk first. Put your shoes by the door so the swap is ready.

  4. 4

Check in on both each night. Two streaks, one swap: every day you stay clear is also a day you did something better.
