Habit swap

Smoking vs walking: swap the cigarette break for a walk

A cigarette break is really a break: a few minutes outside, away from the desk. Keep the break, change what fills it.

The verdict: Walking will not make you quit on its own, but a short walk reliably eases cravings and withdrawal, which makes the hardest moments of quitting easier to get through.

What you gain

The case for walking

Cravings drop, for longer

In every study that compared exercise with sitting, a short bout of activity reduced cigarette cravings and withdrawal, with effects lasting up to 50 minutes. Even 15 minutes of light activity worked.

The next cigarette comes later

In several studies, people who exercised waited two to three times longer before their next cigarette.

Strong evidence, honest limits

A pooled analysis found strong evidence that activity reduces cravings in the short term. Exercise programmes alone have not been shown to raise long-term quit rates, so pair walking with a proven quit aid.

The swap

How to make the swap in Streako

  1. 1

Add a Yes / No habit called "Smoke-free day", every day, with a reminder at 21:30.

  2. 2

Add "Walk 10,000 steps" as a Count habit: 10,000 steps, every day.

  3. 3

When a craving hits, walk for 10 minutes before deciding anything. Most of the time, the decision makes itself.

  4. 4

Check in on both each night. Two streaks, one swap: every day you stay clear is also a day you did something better.

FAQ

Smoking vs walking: common questions

It helps you get through cravings, which is where most quit attempts fail. On its own it has not been shown to raise quit rates, so combine it with nicotine replacement or a stop smoking service.

Ten to fifteen minutes is enough. Studies found benefits from short, light bouts. You do not need to be out of breath.

Walk to the far end of the building, take the stairs or stand and stretch. Any movement beats sitting with the craving.
