How to stop late-night snacking

Night snacking is rarely about hunger. It is habit, boredom and tiredness. A clear kitchen-closed time does most of the work.

The risks

Why late-night snacking is harmful

More hunger, more storage

Eating the same food four hours later in the day doubled hunger, slowed calorie burning and shifted fat tissue towards storing fat, in a controlled trial.

Reflux at night

Eating close to lying down makes heartburn and reflux more likely. Leaving at least 3 hours between eating and bed may help.

Cravings and withdrawal

No withdrawal timeline is established. Night cravings usually come from a light dinner, a late screen session or being overtired. Fix those and most of the snacking stops without a fight.

Common triggers

  • TV or streaming
  • A small or skipped dinner
  • Staying up late

The plan

How to quit

  1. 1

    Set a kitchen-closed time

Pick a time about 3 hours before bed and close the kitchen. Brushing your teeth straight after dinner is a strong signal that eating is done.

  2. 2

    Eat enough at dinner

A dinner with protein and fibre keeps you full for longer. Many night snackers are simply under-eating earlier in the day.

  3. 3

    Write an if-then plan

"If I want a snack after 21:00, I will have a glass of water or herbal tea first." Often the urge passes.

Start small

Set your first kitchen-closed time just 30 minutes earlier than when you usually snack. Check in before bed. Move it earlier every week until it sits about 3 hours before you sleep.

FAQ

Quitting late-night snacking: common questions

Have a planned, small snack such as fruit or yoghurt at a fixed time, then close the kitchen. If you are often truly hungry, eat more at dinner.

Shift your times to your schedule. The idea is a gap between your last meal and your main sleep, whenever that is.

Some people find mint gum or brushing their teeth after dinner a useful signal that eating is over. Try it and keep what works.
