How to quit vaping for good

Vaping can be a useful way off cigarettes, but it keeps you hooked on nicotine. Quitting is easier with a plan than with a sudden stop on a bad day.

The risks

Why vaping is harmful

Nicotine and the developing brain

Nicotine can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood and impulse control. The brain keeps developing until about age 25.

Not just water vapour

Vape aerosol can contain cancer-causing chemicals and fine particles that are breathed deep into the lungs.

Addiction comes early

Young people can show signs of nicotine addiction before they vape every day.

Long-term effects unknown

Nicotine vaping is less harmful than smoking, but it is not completely harmless, and its long-term effects are not yet known.

Cravings and withdrawal

Vaping withdrawal is nicotine withdrawal, so it follows the same pattern as quitting cigarettes: usually worst in the first few days and easing over about 3 to 4 weeks. Irritability, restlessness, poor sleep and strong urges are normal and temporary. Each urge passes faster than it feels.

The plan

How to quit

  1. 1

    Step the strength down

Lower the nicotine strength gradually, for example 20, 12, 6, 3 then 0 mg, staying a week or two at each level before the next step.

  2. 2

    Grow vape-free zones

Start with places and times where you never vape: the bedroom, the car, the first hour of the day. Widen them every week.

  3. 3

    Use a text programme

Free text-message quit programmes for young people improved the odds of quitting by nearly 40% in a randomised trial. In the US, text DITCHVAPE to 88709.

    Write an if-then plan

"If I want to vape after class, I will drink a glass of water first." Deciding the swap in advance takes the decision out of the moment.

Start small

If a vape-free day is too big a jump, start with a vape-free morning and check in at noon. Push the first vape of the day later each week, then switch to a full vape-free day once you reach zero nicotine.

FAQ

Quitting vaping: common questions

Staying off cigarettes comes first. When you feel secure, step the nicotine strength down and stop vaping too. Talk to a stop smoking service if you are worried about going back to cigarettes.

They remove nicotine addiction, but you still breathe in aerosol with chemicals and particles. Zero nicotine is a good last step before stopping, not a place to stay.

Withdrawal usually eases over 3 to 4 weeks, with the hardest days at the start. Occasional urges can show up later in old trigger situations. They pass.
