How to stop doomscrolling and use social media less

Feeds are designed so you never reach the end. You do not have to delete everything. A clear daily limit and a few changes to your phone give the time back.

The risks

Why doomscrolling is harmful

Mood and mental health

Teens who spend more than 3 hours a day on social media face double the risk of depression and anxiety symptoms. The average teen spends about 3.5 hours.

Scrolling over sleep

About 1 in 4 adults say they put phone time ahead of getting enough sleep.

Less use, better mood

Students who limited social apps to about 30 minutes a day for 3 weeks felt less lonely and less depressed than those who did not.

Cravings and withdrawal

There is no established withdrawal timeline for social media. Expect the urge to check out of habit: picking up the phone with no reason is a cue, not a need. In one study, people who stepped away from Facebook for four weeks gained about an hour a day and reported higher well-being.

The plan

How to quit

  1. 1

Cap it at about 30 minutes

Set an app limit in your phone settings. A 30-minute daily cap improved mood in a randomised trial without people quitting entirely.

  2. 2

    Take a real break

Try deactivating one app for a few weeks. People who did it for four weeks freed up about 60 minutes a day.

  3. 3

    Add friction

Move social apps off the home screen, log out after each use and turn off non-essential notifications. Every extra tap is a chance to stop.

  4. 4

    Write an if-then plan

"If I unlock my phone with no reason, I will put it face down and take three breaths." Name the cue and the habit loosens.

Start small

Check your screen time for last week and find your daily average for social apps. Set your first limit 15 minutes below it, and tick each night you stay under. Lower it every couple of weeks until you reach about 30 minutes.

FAQ

Quitting doomscrolling: common questions

No. Streako does not read your app usage. You check your phone’s screen time and tick the day if you stayed under. That moment of looking is part of the habit.

Set your own rule. Many people count feeds and short videos but not messaging friends. Write the rule in a note on your first check-in.

You do not need to. A limit you keep works better than a dramatic deletion you undo next week. A few weeks off one app is a good middle step.
