How to stop gaming binges and play on your terms

Most people who play games do not have a problem. But "one more match" at 2am, missed plans and bad sleep add up. The goal is to choose when you stop.

~3%

of people worldwide meet the criteria for gaming disorder. Stevens et al. 2021

The risks

Why gaming binges is harmful

A recognised disorder

The WHO recognises gaming disorder: losing control over gaming, putting it ahead of other activities and carrying on despite harm, usually for at least 12 months.

About 1 in 33 people

A review of 53 studies put the global rate of gaming disorder at about 3%, and about 2% in the most careful studies.

Sleep pays the bill

Late sessions push bedtime back, and screens before bed delay sleep and leave you less alert the next day.

Cravings and withdrawal

No withdrawal is established for gaming. The pull comes from game design: matches with no natural end, daily rewards and friends online. Decide the stopping point before you start, when the decision is still easy.

Common triggers

  • Daily rewards and events
  • Friends online
  • Stress or avoiding work
  • Weekends
  • Losing a match
  • Console in the bedroom

The plan

How to quit

  1. 1

Set the stop before you start

Decide a number of matches or an end time, and set a timer. Stopping at a natural break is far easier than stopping mid-game.

  2. 2

    Move the console

Keep the console or gaming PC out of the bedroom. Gaming then becomes a choice you walk to, not the default before sleep.

  3. 3

Get help if it is taking over

Cognitive behavioural therapy has a large effect on gaming disorder symptoms. If gaming is hurting work, study or relationships, talk to a professional.

  4. 4

    Write an if-then plan

"If it is 23:00, I finish this match and log off." A rule set in daylight survives midnight better.

Start small

Do not cut gaming out. Set one rule: no gaming after a fixed time on school or work nights. Check in each morning. When that holds for two weeks, add a weekday time limit.
